river from firefly ~ version 2
Completed: January 2006
Rive Tam is a character on the canceled T.V. show "Firefly" and the movie "Serenity". She was a child genius who had her brain "played with" by government officals. She was rescued by her brother and is now a fugitive. Besides being a genius, she is (as a result of the government testing) a psychic, crazy, and a lethal weapon. The outfit I made is from the episode of Firefly called "Safe". You can find pictures of this costume in this image gallery. This costume is featured on multiple pages of the gallery.
I orginally had made this costume the night before a Halloween event, but once that was over, I decided that I needed to go back and spend time making a proper, more accurate costume. You can see my first version here. I'm warning you now, it is not very good.
But that's why I remade it! This costume includes: A red mohair sweater from ebay. I believe it was originally from Express.
The skirt is made from two colors of pink broadcloth from Joanns. Each layer is a complete circle and they are held together by a waistband that ties in the back.

The boots are "gladiator" boots which I bought off ebay. They originally had silver metal plates on the front but I painted them black. The paint is scratching off however, so I have to figure out a way to fix that.
Funny story along with the boots. I noticed a few days ago (about 2 months after I had bought them and worn them for a while) that the shoes are actually two different sizes. Once is a UK size 4, the other is a 5. I started laughing when I realized that because I had been wearing them and hadn't noticed it for 2 months.

These boots were on sale on ebay, and well, they look almost exactly like River's, and they were $100 cheaper than they normally are...so I bought them. I have to paint the gaurds black, but they should fit! A good shot of River's boots are here.

They are slightly too big in the calf, so I'm going to see what I can do about that. I still have to paint the shin part black like River's.
December 23
I should probably post these pictures that have been sitting in my camera since forever. I painted the metal plates on the boots black and I even bought a new sweater off ebay that looks so much better than the one I had. Pictures:
