babydoll dress
May 2007
I like the look of the high waisted babydoll dresses that are in style right now, but I just can't bring myself to buy them because they make me look pregnant. So, I took matters into my own hands and made one so I could adjust the waistline to where I wanted it. Fabric:
Cotton rib knit
Pattern:
Drafted on own
Here is my first draft pinned together. It's basically squares of material draped and pleated into shape, no pattern required.
This dress was extremely simple to put together. It's basically 7 rectangles of fabric. The top was 2 pieces, a front and a back, but I needed to take it in, so I made a back seam. The top is also lined in another layer of the rib knit. The skirt part is one piece of fabric with no seams, since that was how the rib knit came. I simply pleated it at the top to make it fit to the bodice. The entire dress is serged to allow the fabric to stretch. The shoulder straps are 2 tubes of material inserted between the layers of the bodice. I left the bottom hem unhemmed since the material won't fray and it gives it more of a casual look.
All I have of me in the dress are some funky pictures where I messed with the lighting. You really can't see the dress very well, but I like the look of the pictures

Even though I don't have any good pictures of me in this dress, my roommate borrowed it and instead I have pictures of her wearing it:

Overall, this is a very fun summer dress to wear.
